DOGTOWN, Marin County — October 31, 2026. The small settlement of Dogtown sits near a gateway to the Bolinas Ridge trail network. The McCurdy Trail climbs from a trailhead along Highway 1 at the community’s northern end toward the ridge.
What is the route?
According to the National Park Service’s Point Reyes place-name history, the approximately two-mile-long McCurdy Trail ascends from the McCurdy Trailhead to the Bolinas Ridge Trail. The route recalls the historic McCurdy ranching property later acquired for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
What should hikers prepare for?
Climbing from the coastal highway toward the ridge can involve steep grades, exposure to sun, slippery soil during rainy months and changing fog or wind. Visitors should carry sufficient water and check the NPS trail advisories before leaving. An old trail description is not real-time evidence of open, hazard-free conditions.
Where should cars park?
Use legally designated parking near the trailhead, and do not block Highway 1, private driveways or emergency access. The route begins in a rural area rather than at a large staffed visitor center; do not assume toilets or drinking water will be available at the trailhead.
Why is it important to respect boundaries?
Dogtown and surrounding hills contain private residences, ranch land and public recreation corridors. Visitors must stay on designated access routes and not treat an old ranch road as open public property.
